This project was my third architectural project and perhaps the most special one. The second year I engaged in architecture classes, as I just got a hang of building a model, using illustrator and knowing what a architecture even is, comes another challenge for me. The annual DX Canadian National High School Competition comes around the corner.
The definition of playground to me is a place where everyone could enjoy themselves, but unfortunately most existing playgrounds in Vancouver could only satisfy a particular group of people; therefore, my playground concept is to consist multiple features that will content all age groups and working as a harmonious system. I started off by analyzing movement of dunking basketball, which later inspired and transformed into my landscape. Site of my playground will be in Stanley park, due to its beautiful view and the serene neighbourhood. The landscape of this project is inspired by my childhood when I most enjoyed climbing obstacles and playing tag, which integrated together to form a structure, where children could run around and climb on it. It’s shape is transformed by the analytic movement diagram of dunking. Afterwards I pondered some of the lacking public spaces in Vancouver. Then I settled upon the idea of integrating a undercover basketball court and undercover skatepark in my project. In the U.S many of these facilities are common under bridges, thus inspired me to lift ground up to provide a sheltered space for skateboarders and basketball players all season, while there is rooftop grass area perfect for basking under the sun and picnic. The area will continuously extend into the ocean and come back up creating a view deck and it’s declined slope will form a pool independent from the ocean water beside it, which also could be drained and turn into slide ways for children in winter times. The structure emerges three organic waves, which contrast and stand out from the landscape. Although two appear different, but both work in a harmoniously, which refer back to the initial concept. Most importantly, the TRI-WAVE demonstrates how distinctive complex individuals could coexist to benefit others. The TRI-WAVE is a playground for anyone, escaped from traditional playgrounds, which negotiates over the barrier of various ages and groups, offers something for everyone and integrates useful spaces that lacks in the city.
